A fine example of a pearl bodkin case etched and inlaid with silver and gold leaf. It is French and dates to the late 18th century.
The pearl is engraved with two hearts aflame on the altar of love against a lattice background on the lid. The bottom section has foliage and cupid's arrow, shield and horn. The whole is edged in gold leaf. The reverse is engraved with flowers and foliage and inlaid with silver leaf.
The piece is in excellent order with minor losses of leaf as shown. The silver leaf is tarnished.
